Sinus Tarsi Syndrome
Sinus tarsi syndrome is somewhat of a paradoxical problem in that it can be caused by two opposite things:
Firstly, one of the common causes of sinus tarsi syndrome is a strain on the interosseous ligaments in the sinus tarsi as part of an ankle sprain. This cause of sinus tarsi syndrome is a common cause of chronic ankle pain after an inversion ankle sprain. It is often not diagnosed at the time of the sprain and tends to get detected at a later date after the initial pain and swelling has subsided.
Secondly, another cause of sinus tarsi syndrome is a foot that has pronated to its end range of motion at the subtalar joint. If the compressive forces are great enough this can lead to the symptoms that get diagnosed as sinus tarsi syndrome.
The treatment of the first cause of sinus tarsi syndrome is mobilization and physical therapy and the treatment of the second cause of sinus tarsi syndrome is foot orthotics to prevent the subtalar joint pronating to end range of motion.
