Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction

Posted by | May 25, 2011 | Uncategorized

The arch of the foot is vital in the function of the foot and the biomechanics of the whole lower limb. Many things support the arch of the foot including the shape of the bones and the ligaments. The primary muscles involved in this function is the posterior tibial muscle or tibialis posterior muscle. If this muscles can no longer do it job, then posterior tibial tendon dysfunction develops with progressive pain and flattening of the arch of the foot. If posterior tibial tendon dysfunction is not treated early, it can become very disabling in the long term. The early treatment for posterior tibial tendon dysfunction is usually aggressive foot orthotics to prevent the deformity and pain from progressing. If that is not successful or it has progressed them some sort of bracing is needed for posterior tibial tendon dysfunction. If that does not help, then there are very few options for posterior tibial tendon dysfunction apart from surgery.
