Kohler’s Disease
There are many different disorders that can affect the growing bones in the foot of children. Probably the most commonly know one is Severs Disease, that affects the calcaneus. As such less common condition. Kohler’s Disease affects the tarsal navicular bone. This is due to an avascular necrosis of the bone, probably from high compressive forces on the bone. The navicular bone is at the top of the arch, so is subjected to a lot of force, hence the risk for Kohler’s Disease. The typical case is a five yr old boy that present with pain over the navicular and a history of limping. Treatment for Kohler’s disease almost always needs a walking cast.
