Cracked Heels

Posted by | February 24, 2011 | Podiatry Issues

Cracked heels are distressing, but common problem and can really hurt. When there is dry and thick skin around the edges of the heel, this can crack and tear on the skin below. Generally this will not heal unless the dry and thick skin is removed. The best way to deal with cracked heels is to have a podiatrists remove the thick skin, then regularly file the skin with afoot file and regularly use emollients to keep the skin supple and less likely to crack. The most common predisposing factors for cracked heels are, obviously, the thicker dry skin, being overweight and not wearing shoes with closed in heels. The closed in heels help to keep the fat pad under the heel bone and less likely to spread out around the edges to develop a cracked heel.
