Barefoot Running
Barefoot running is an odd fit with Podiatry. You see some of the barefoot community claiming that barefoot running will put podiatry out of business because of the running injuries that will be prevented. That just shows how little they know about Podiatry and also how wrong they are. It’s becoming increasingly clear that barefoot running is an economic boom for podiatry and other professions involved in the treatment of running injuries.
You see so many claims in the barefoot running community that Podiatrists are opposed to barefoot running, yet when you look on the Podiatry forums and at discussions, it’s actually quite hard to find any podiatrists who are opposed to barefoot running, with most agreeing that its probably good if done properly. What you do see on these forums is a lot of debate about the ‘religious zeal’ that those in the barefoot running community go about the activity; the exaggerated and unsupported claims made by them about the science; and the way that they totally misunderstand and misuse pseudoscience to claim it supports what they are doing when in reality it does not.
There is even a website by a biomechanist set up specifically to debunk the non-science and the claims made about barefoot running. It can be amusing reading on barefoot running websites and forums about what they think of that site. It’s clear that they are missing its point and their reactions to it confirm what the site is saying! Concern has also been expressed at how the media interprets research on barefoot running and presents it.
Barefoot running shoes are all the craze now, but the very term ‘barefoot running shoes‘ is somewhat of an oxymoron as how can you be barefoot and also wear shoes. A barefoot running shoe is considered a shoe that is so minimalist that you might as well be wearing no shoes.
